Ethel Allen Ski Scholarship Donate to the Scholarship Fund
The Madison West Kiwanis Club kicked off a multi-year scholarship program in 2008 with Adaptive Sports. In May 2006, well-known scientist, University of Wisconsin alumna, and former faculty member Ethel Allen passed away at 98. The provisions of her estate called for a distribution of funds to the Madison West Kiwanis Foundation to be used exclusively for scholarships for Madison area residents with disabilities to participate in Adaptive Sports Association (ASA) programming.
If you are awarded an Adaptive Skier Scholarship, you will be traveling to the Durango Mountain Resort in the San Juan Mountains of Southwest Colorado. A mountain atmosphere, friendly people, and an exciting, life-changing experience will be part of a six-day, all-expense paid trip. The scholarship provides an opportunity for adults with physical disabilities to rediscover their potential, successfully meet and overcome challenges, learn and enjoy a new sport, and travel and make new friends.
The scholarship funds as many as four people from the greater Madison area to learn to ski under the careful direction of the Adaptive Sports Association (ASA) ski instructors at Durango. The ASA is one of the country's best ski schools for people with disabilities. Although all applicants will be considered, ideal candidates are adults over age 18 with a physical disability who want to or already participate regularly in athletic activities, are able to travel by air to Durango, CO, are new to disabled skiing or snowboarding.
We hope successful candidates will help “spread the word" about the program within their communities and support organizations. The only cost to scholarship individuals will be any out-of-pocket expenses in Durango. If you require an attendant, they may accompany you on this trip, but you will be responsible for the attendant’s expenses.

- October 24: Informational Meeting - 11:45 at Covenant Presbyterian (Regular Weekly Meeting of MWK)
- November 15: Deadline for scholarship applications. Here is a link to the application form.
- December 1-10: Zoom interviews will be scheduled for all scholarship candidates. You will be contacted by phone or email about an interview date/time.
- December 17: (Approximate date) you’ll be notified if you have been selected to receive one of the Kiwanis ASA scholarships. The ASA makes the final determination of eligibility.
- Mid-January: (Tentative) trip to Durango, CO, to enjoy four days of skiing. Flight arrangements will be made on your behalf, departing from Madison on Monday, and returning on Saturday.
